Are wrinkle relaxing injectables safe?

Our products are made from a drug called Botulinum Toxin or as most would recognise it: Botox. Botulinum Toxin has full FDA approval. As a consequence can be used for both medical and cosmetic purposes and has been for over 20 years with no known adverse effects. Like most cosmetic treatments, side effects can occur. Very occasionally some clients report mild bruising, this can have an increased likelihood when menstruating. Rarely (approximately 1-3%) some may experience a 'droopy eyelid' both however can be corrected or will fade in time. To reduce the risk of complications it is important that our treatments are administered by highly qualified and experienced Nurse Consultant in a considered environment – for example; not in the back of a hair/nail salon where cross contamination may occur. Another important consideration being that infection control measures must be adhered to, this often does not happen when dealing with a person without professional training. Lack of adherence to solid infection control procedures may increase the chance of infection – of course this is rare and not impossible despite ICP processes being adhered to.

Will I be able to move my face?

Of course! The ‘frozen’ look many of us associate with wrinkle-relaxing injections is only caused when high levels of toxin are administered into one area. Virtue Skin Clinic practitioners target small specific muscles that are responsible for unwanted lines and wrinkles. This means normal facial expressions such as smiling, frowning or looking surprised could be lessened but not drastically affected – that is of course you have a specific desire to have the un-creased and unwrinkled look which we can of course facilitate – customer/patient choice. This is personal to you hence during your consultation your practitioner will talk you through how the treatment can be used for subtle effects so no one need know your secret or a more proactive and prominent approach.

How does it work?

When you concentrate, squint or frown, the muscles in your face contract. After years of frequent contraction combined with other environmental and lifestyle factors, lines and wrinkles will form and eventually become permanent. When the muscles in our face move, a message is sent from the brain via nerves to the muscles, instructing them to contract. Wrinkle relaxing injections are a natural protein that works by interrupting this process, leaving those muscles unable to crease the skin.

Do WRINKLE RELAXING INJECTIONS really prevent signs of ageing?

It has been reported that, if used regularly, wrinkle relaxing injections can delay and prevent the signs of ageing. As we know facial movement such as squinting and frowning can cause lines and wrinkles. Botulinum toxin restricts facial muscle movement which means signs of ageing can be prevented. More importantly as time passes and you continue to follow your therapeutic use of Botulinum toxin, you may find that the muscles in your face become less powerful and therefore you may be able to leave it longer between sessions than the early years of the start of treatment.

What areas can be treated with WRINKLE RELAXING INJECTIONS?

Wrinkle relaxing injections are mainly used for the face. Forehead wrinkles, crow's feet lines around the eyes, and the "11 lines" between the eyebrows are the most popular areas however other uses include lifting eyebrows, decreasing the "orange peel" appearance of the chin and lifting the corners of the mouth.

What happens after treatment?

You can carry on with your day as normal immediately after leaving the clinic, although it’s important to avoid anything strenuous for 24 hours such as going to the gym and in the early hours post injection – try not to bend over. Side effects are rare, but occasionally some clients experience bruising, but this usually fades quickly.

Before you leave the clinic at the end of your treatment, we will book you in for a free check-up 2 weeks later, so that we can review the results of your treatment once it has taken full effect. We can also book your next appointment in 3-4 months times to ensure you maintain your new look! Using high SPF sun cream to protect your skin from sun damage can keep your skin looking younger for longer.

Dermal Fillers for an Instant Lift:

After a decade of use and great results, dermal fillers have emerged as a proven treatment for lifting facial lines and folds. Age, illness, smoking, sun exposure and excessive weight loss often result in nose and mouth lines that alter your appearance and impact the way you feel. Injectable fillers plump up facial lines, creases and wrinkles for a smoother and firmer look.

Men and women from Yorkshire, Humber, London and Belfast rely on our expert procedures for…

  • Facial contouring – like cheek and chin dimples
  • Adding volume to facial features – mouth, eyes, nose and forehead
  • Regaining a youthful appearance

What is a 'vial' and how many do I need for my treatment?

A vial is simply a measurement of the anti-wrinkle injectable liquid administered during treatment. Typically, treatment for nose to mouth lines require 1-2 vials, marrionette lines require 1 vial, lips require 1 - 2 vials and cheeks require 2 vials.

Do they hurt?

Unlike traditional procedures, such as surgical face lifts or implants, this treatment requires no cuts, incisions or stitches. It may involve some light pain or discomfort. Clients describe it as a tiny scratch as the needle goes in, with a slight stinging sensation as the filler is applied. For those feeling anxious, we can use a local anesthetic to numb the area completely. Afterwards there may be some swelling or bruising. The swelling fades within 48 hour; the bruising can take up to a fortnight.

Will I look dramatically different?

No. Our practitioners work like artists, using the natural contours of your face for guidance. Your normal facial expressions will remain unaffected. During your free consultation your doctor or nurse will discuss the best plan for you for subtle effects.

What happens at my consultation?

Our in-depth consultations are essential as this provides the basis for delivering a clinical and collaborative outcome for you. It's important to us that you achieve the results you want, and we believe this starts with a great consultation. You will never be rushed and our highly trained Nurse Consultant will take the time to discuss aspects of your skin you may be unhappy with, your desired results, costs and timings. Our aim is for you to leave your consultation feeling confident, fully informed and looking forward to your treatment.

Where can I have Dermal Fillers?

Popular areas to add volume and fullness to include the lips, cheeks and bridge of the nose. For smoothing and plumping lines and wrinkles, popular treatment areas include around the forehead, eyes, mouth, chin, neck, décolletage and hands. At present our treatment program includes assistance with reduction of frown lines, around the mouth and lips. Other areas will be added to the treatment opportunities in the next 6-12 months.

Side effects are rare, but occasionally some clients experience bruising, but this usually fades quickly. Not every wrinkle-filler is right for every type of wrinkle. The least risks and best results come from using the right one correctly. That's why you should only have fillers injected by a professionally trained Nurse or Doctor. All wrinkle fillers have a downside, including the risk of allergic reaction and the formation of tiny bumps under the skin. In some cases, those bumps may be permanent. And sometimes, a bluish skin discoloration known as the Tyndall effect happens. The color change can last for several months, but there are treatments available. In very rare cases, skin cells may die if the wrinkle fillers are not used properly. There have also been a few reported cases of blindness and nerve paralysis. Typically, the wrinkle fillers that last longer are the ones more likely to cause side effects

Growing long eyelashes with Bimatoprost:

Bimatoprost eye drops are used to treat hypotrichosis, which is when eyelash growth is abnormal or not sufficient to give you adequate or enough eyelashes. The product is a synthetic analogue (mimic) of a naturally occurring chemical called prostaglandin, which is thought to be involved in hair growth and works by increasing the length of the active hair growth phase. Our eye drops contain Bimatoprost which can help you grow eyelashes that are longer, fuller and darker than they were before.
